Back the Blue

I want to talk about what it actually means to back the blue โ€” not the bumper sticker version, not the political slogan, but the real thing. Because I wore that uniform for over twenty years, and I can tell you that the conversation happening in this country right now is missing something important.

When I joined the Port Authority of NY & NJ Police Department, I wasn't doing it for glory. I was doing it because I grew up in a neighborhood where the police were the only thing standing between order and chaos on certain nights. I'd seen what happened when they weren't there. I wanted to be part of the solution. That's the truth.

And most of the officers I worked with โ€” the vast majority โ€” felt the same way. They were people from the community, people who cared, people who showed up every single day knowing they might not come home. That deserves respect. Full stop.

But backing the blue also has to mean holding the blue accountable. It has to mean acknowledging when things go wrong and demanding better. Because if we can't have that honest conversation, then we're not really supporting police officers โ€” we're just defending a symbol. And symbols don't protect communities. People do.

I've seen officers do things I'm not proud of. I've also seen officers do things that would make you weep with admiration. The truth is complicated, and anyone who tells you it isn't is selling you something. Real support for law enforcement means wanting the best officers possible โ€” well-trained, well-supported, mentally healthy, and accountable.

So yes, back the blue. But back them the right way. Back them by funding mental health resources for officers. Back them by demanding good training and strong leadership. Back them by treating them like human beings who carry an enormous weight โ€” not robots who should just absorb whatever the job throws at them without complaint.

That's what backing the blue looks like to me. Not blind loyalty. Real support. There's a difference.
